Wow – sounds super – can’t wait, fair play!!!!!
PadosMemberI reckon the best way to do this would be to put a large framed green rectangle on a wall – but just above a dresser in a living room. There’s a party going on in the room and there is a bowl of Doritos on the dresser – the camera never leaves the dresser – there are flashing coloured lights and music and people keep passing by taking doritos from the bowl
meanwhile shoot the scene in the picture separately and put it in over the green
get one person in the picture to get everybody elses attention (in the picture) and they all come right out to the foreground and start staring at the doritos – they all reach their hands out towards the doritos
cut to the scene in the picture – actually shot from as if we are in the picture and the actors pull a large bowl from offscreen into the shot (side-profile)
cut to the outside world and the bowl is now in the picture
cut to the picture world and everybody in the picture is holding one large dorito between them – all taking a bite from a different side.
whatya reckon?
I’ll help out as much as i can if you decide to do this – but I am fairly busy – so not sure how much I’ll be able to do
PadosMemberAnybody interested or able to take some stills next Tuesday for our CUT Horror Comp effort???
PadosMemberI’m on – I think it’s a sweet idea – actors shouldn’t be a problem – there are plenty on this site
costumes would be a case of fancy dress – you could always make it a roman scene and have everyone wearing togas (white sheets)
i think you could cheat a lot of the perspective stuff with certain camera angles and simple post – I think inky’s ideas might work – especially the cheated perspective one – any set builders out there that would build us a fake wall?
PadosMemberI dunno – I liked the idea of the bowl being dragged into the picture and because the people in the picture are so small compared to the bowl it takes a team effort – then as a funny gag at the end you could cut to the party in the picture and the bowl is huge and so are the doritos –
then your catchline could be "Doritos – larger than life" or "The small snack with the BIG taste"
??????????????
PadosMemberHello All –
The film is cast and crewed for the most part
We are shooting some steadicam stuff with quinny on sunday and then the main shoot is on Tuesday – that’s when the actors get the chop! THERE WILL BE BLOOD and lots of it!

Let me know when and where and I’ll be there[/quote:3ik6frem]Hi Hanman – by all means you’re more than welcome to come along and be involved – however it will be a very small guerilla affair and we won’t be shooting for more than 6 hours – no lighting set-ups as we will be using just the natural available light as the location is out in the countryside in a forestry – so I’m just thinking it might not be worth your effort on this occasion.
PadosMemberhow would you be fixed mid-week –
say Tuesday 22nd or Wednesday 23rd of this month?
PadosMemberHi Canty,
just watched ‘Borro’ – fair play I thought it was very good. Very nicely shot – some really nice angles and the quality looks great online. I like the way you think it’s going to be a serious piece of social commentary or something and then you realise it’s a piss-take. Really like the name too.
The only piece of constructive criticism I’d make is that it is too long – the pace just seems a bit off – I’d re-edit and make it really tight – make it snappy and I think that will help the humor a lot.
all the best,
Paddy
PadosMemberHi Vadakin,
I spent 4 years getting a film degree in Dublin and when I finished I started writing feature scripts – I quickly realised they weren’t any good when someone in the industry was kind enough to pull me aside and be honest and straight with me and tell me so – and they explained why – I simply didn’t have the structure or technique to make a well-rounded script. They advised I go and get some books and teach myself screenwriting – I did and I’m still learning and practicing – but it worked, my scripts improved and I even got one optioned.
Film schools and courses can be very helpful when it comes to getting a grounding in technique and hands on experience and in finding a film-making network but you have to work hard at it yourself at home if you really want to get anywhere.
These courses are not the be-all and end-all especially when it comes to learning to write – writing takes good strong ideas and solid technique and structure that you have to learn and then practice practice practice……
Here are some books and sites that I found and find very helpful;
– The Screenwriter’s Bible by David Trottier
– Directing: Film Techniques and Aesthetics by Michael Rabiger (great sections on story and writing)
– How Not to Write a Screenplay: 101 Common Mistakes Most Screenwriters Make by Denny Martin Flinn
and websites;
– http://www.scriptpimp.com – take some time to browse this site and sign upo for their newsletter
– http://www.wildsound-filmmaking-feedback-events.com/
These are just some samples – I know there are thousands of books and sites out there but I found these helpful and interesting – try a few and make them work for you – use them as guidelines and then make them your own.
I hope this is helpful and not too preachy!
All the best,
Paddy
