Far as I know between July 2006 and now is the completion.

As for duration for a short , some festivals ( Cannes is one I think) consider 59 mins and less to be a short , other go for 30 mins or less and others go for 15 mins or less.

As far as I’m concerned as long as it’s complete in itself then it’s irrelevant what the duration is . if three mins works then three it is , if it takes 22mins 30 secs

If you are trying to get into the Cork film Fest my most solid advice is to tell you what Mick Hannigan likes in shorts , they have to be a little quirky , they have to have their own little hook. Outside that the short Form is very difficult to define. That’s a subject that has been very hot in recent years. My own personal views on a short are that they are defined by their structure , content and intent. Structure , a short doesn’t follow the three act structure of a feature , instead they are fluid , being one act , two act or reversed acts . In content I feel a short shouldn’t have subplots , or alternate themes , so they would normally deal with a single or maybe two strong themes or ideas, and lastly intent is the most difficult to pin , but I like to think that with a short the intent of the filmmaker is more purely directed at the dialogue with the audience than normally found in a feature.

Realistically , when we set up this site we had a good long discussion about whether or not to attempt to be National , and we decided that there was no point in spreading ourselves too thin. It’s hard enough to keep momentum at the best of times without claiming to be national and really just not doing anything for anyone outside of Cork . Hence a Geographic Focus , it does allow us to meet people and get them involved in shoots without anyone being too put out .

It may not be so apparent to a writer , but travelling is a major killer to an actor or crew member . Realistically is an actor going to travel at their own expense from Donegal down to Cork for rehearsals readings castings or shoots ?
Answer is 99% of the time no and the other 1% you really feel like shit when someone goes to the effort and then you have to say " sorry I haven’t got anything for you " Same goes vice versa.

For that reason we decided our focus would be the Cork region . It’s not exclusive or anything , just practical. That said there are members from around the country , ( it’s a good way to have contacts down here if you are travelling down for stuff ) A writer writes wherever they are and has a lot more flexibility in terms of how they communicate with a Director
or producer ( face time is still important , it just doesn’t have the same overhead as it would have with actors and crew ) I know I personally work with writers from outside the region. It’s harder but worth it in my opinion.

We are going to try and organise an AGM for this club idea . I’ll get on it as soon as a few things quieten Down , But I’m thinking now that maybe sometime between Patricks Day and Easter might be good
    ( maybe Holy Saturday )

How do people feel about that ?

We haven’t had an official Meet and Greet in a while , It was getting hard to come up with interesting things to do on the night . We do however hold a Futureshorts night once a month on the last Wednesday of each month in the Roundy Bar on Castle street in Cork. We screen international and Local short Films and have a chat . It’s very relaxed and You’d be very welcome along.

Cork Film Centre will sort you out ,

You can actually buy shorter Digibeta tapes( 15mins I think ) talk to Chris in there about it .

Last year for the Film Fest I think he transfered all the Made in Cork shorts to digibeta

    Hanman ,

I’m going to split this section off into it’s own thread , as it’s becoming a conversation , and this thread is for listing really , no bad thing though , conversation is good .

I’ll also add you to the writers group ( if it’s not already done ) and that way you’ll see where writers pop up early drafts for discussion amongst themselves.

If you’re more intersted in letting everyone see some of your stuff, you are welcome to attach it to a post ( but maybe start a new thread for it current and upcoming projects perhaps )

Anyways I’ll move the last few posts from here to there in the next couple of hours ,

Cheers and delighted to have you along

    what’s the exact shot ?
If it’s an action shot of the bullet going through and the explosion out the back you have to model the entire head and put a det into it. Colm from the 101st might have some ideas on the det and how to get the effect you want. You’ll probably have to greenscreen the shot and overlay it in Post

If it’s a body or after the shot then you need to make up a prosthetic from latex( or dragonskin) and Jelly and fit it to the actor. I’m sure I’ve read some stuff on this at some stage on the internet but I just can’t remember where

Well then , looks like we should have a good look at that and thrash it out at the first AGM. I’d like to keep it clear of Futureshorts though ,Futureshorts is Futureshorts, and it’s for short film lovers more so than Filmmakers. If were going to have Pitching sessions then maybe in a more suited atmosphere to that.

I don’t think we’ll be going that particular route , for two reasons
1 , the club isn’t really going to be a funding body , and participation is always optional . if we start having votes on whose going to get what and when , it begins to get political , and it should never really be that way . That’s how I feel anyway.
    2. There isn’t really the money or resources available to tackle things in that way at the moment , Not saying that that arrangement wouldn’t be possible in the future ( depending on how things go ) but really right now it would run a little like this.
Every one gets in a room , pitches are done , some project gets voted in for this month , Those that weren’t particularly interested in that project don’t really bother themselves with doing anything for it , writer gets annoyed and says "well I’m not working on anything for them " and it all falls apart .

Practically I think that’s how it would work . However if we provide the basics . ( insurance is in place , some basic equipment is available, advice is on tap , and a focal point is there to get likeminded people on board and the reputation of the club is built up to make it easier to access outside resources . ) well then I think there is no limits on how well it can grow . Each member will get out what they put in , if not more , and the whole thing can grow organically, without restricting itself to certain roles , as a funding body does ,

But like everything it is possible , as these kinds of things are what should be brought up at an AGM and voted on by the club membership . One possibility is if one member wanted to really push an idea like that then if they could secure sponsorship , they could run the script contest once a month and provide the award to fund that script. That indeed could be a committee role .
