This Years Festival starts on the 12th October
The rules for entry on the Cork Film Fest site are worded kinda strangely…it says (and I quote!):
"To be eligible for the short film competitions, films must have been completed since July 1st 2006 and be 30 minutes or less in duration."
I presume they mean that the film should have been made between July 2006 and now, and not that it should have been completed by July 2006!
Also, some of us were wondering recently about the running time of short films..does anyone know whether it’s advisable to stick to the 3 minute format, or is anything under half an hour ok, as requested by the Cork Film Fest?

As for duration for a short , some festivals ( Cannes is one I think) consider 59 mins and less to be a short , other go for 30 mins or less and others go for 15 mins or less.
As far as I’m concerned as long as it’s complete in itself then it’s irrelevant what the duration is . if three mins works then three it is , if it takes 22mins 30 secs
If you are trying to get into the Cork film Fest my most solid advice is to tell you what Mick Hannigan likes in shorts , they have to be a little quirky , they have to have their own little hook. Outside that the short Form is very difficult to define. That’s a subject that has been very hot in recent years. My own personal views on a short are that they are defined by their structure , content and intent. Structure , a short doesn’t follow the three act structure of a feature , instead they are fluid , being one act , two act or reversed acts . In content I feel a short shouldn’t have subplots , or alternate themes , so they would normally deal with a single or maybe two strong themes or ideas, and lastly intent is the most difficult to pin , but I like to think that with a short the intent of the filmmaker is more purely directed at the dialogue with the audience than normally found in a feature.

Yes, it’s hard to determine what a short film should be. But I would agree that a short film can do without sub-plots; it gets too messy otherwise. It’s best to focus on one theme.
I guess a lot of shorts tend to be one act…some are sort of like a segment from the lives of the characters. Heh I’m getting carried away now..! But it is an interesting topic.
Also, yes, from the shorts I viewed at previous Cork film festivals, I gathered that Mick Hannigan does indeed like his ‘quirky’ shorts. I’m not sure if this is fair; all types should get a look in…even if quirky scripts are fun to write and possibly more fun to make. I have seen some stuff that seems to be wierd for the sake of wierd though.
Saying all that, I really liked that short that won the audience award two years back: I wonder does anyone remember it..it was done in ‘film noir’ style..it was about a hard-boiled detective in County Waterford!Hi Gemma I know its real late replying but was reading over the comments and yeah i remember that one, it was done by students in IADT (the college I’m in), did it start off with ‘scumbags’ rocking in a car?? it was a great film and ive been trying to track down the name of it, any ideas??
