My second film was screened at the Gate a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty surreal seeing something I’d made up on the big screen in front of an audience.

So we had the casting session on Monday. Eight people showed up out of over a hundred contacted…frankly, given the weather and the apparent reputation of St. John’s, I’d almost call that a success

Strangely enough, all but one of them were girls. Which kinda sucked for me because I needed to guys for a scene study on Thursday, but it makes me wonder if the men of Cork really are notoriously lazy haha.

Seriously though, the whole thing was done at the last minute so we have no complaints. We are planning another one for after the pitches for the short films, by which time we will know exactly who is making what. I will keep this thread updated with news as I get it.

On a related note, if any actors or actresses who come along to the casting sessions don’t have monologues for their showreels and would like one filmed, we may be able to accommodate you. If anyone is interested in doing that, I guess you can come along to the casting sessions as they come up or contact me either through a PM here or via email (first post).

Well I’m doing the course because I want to learn about everything and see if something outside screen writing would be good for me.

Is it true that you do another subject outside of film, like computers? Because I might be able to get an exemption from that. Did it years ago.

Oh and just so everyone knows, I’m going to be hitting this site up for work experience <img loading=” title=”Cool” />

I want a cushy job…no lifting or making tea or holding a boom for hours or any of that…I want a nice comfy chair and a clear view of the set. Thanks.

Is there anything in particular I should have going in?

So I’ve heard…I still have no idea what media analysis is or has to do with making films.

I thought it was OK, though I felt it was about 15-20 minutes too short. More time could have been spent on Earth with Wall-E alone on Earth, and then with Eve.

In terms of Pixar films, I’d put it behind The Incredibles which I rate as their best.

Funny how these scripts become the stuff of legend! Like Kevin Smith’s superman script. I have that one and it also reads like a fan script. There are some good ideas in there, but it isn’t the god of Superman scripts either.[/quote:nmd9o7we]

I have read that too as well as Superman Reborn and Abrams Superman Flyby, which is just plain awful by the way.

I see people complain about Superman Returns, which isn’t perfect, but looking back at the failed scripts…I think people should consider themselves lucky.

I have my interview next Friday. I’m not really nervous, I always do well in interviews. I’m just not entirely sure if the course is in fact the best thing for me. Directing is something I have considered but it was never more than just a thought. But I suppose at the very least I’ll learn a bit about the process of making films and meet like-minded people who I might be able to work with in the future.

    Anyways, wish me luck.

Excellent! Have you read it yet?[/quote:28eezd8u]

I’ve glanced through it. Haven’t had time to read it in detail yet. But one thing is clear. It’s not the god of all Indy IV scripts that many have claimed it to be. In fact a lot of the stuff in the final film was carried over from this draft. including the "fridge" and the ants.

There are plenty of silly moments, some of the dialogue is just plain awful and it reads more like a fan script than a draft from a noted screenwriter.

In fact the only thing that I would say is better than what’s in the final film is that the aliens are more menacing. frankly, I can see why Lucas rejected the draft. There is just as much to complain about in this draft as there is in the final film.

You know, I watched the previous films over the last few weeks on RTE and I felt that Crystal Skull was right up there with them. Yes the fridge scene was over the top…but more over the top than some of Short Rounds antics?

The subject matter is a little different and a bit weird, but how is it any weirder than melting heads in Raiders, the last third of Temple of Doom, or the rapid aging of Crusade?

If you watch the first three movies in the cold light of day, they all have problems, whether it’s effects wise, or over the top stunts, monkeys giving a Nazi salute and saying "uh-oh".

Is the script for Crystal Skull perfect? No…it’s patched together from previous drafts, so there are going to be some problems. And a lot of people will absolutely loathe the the last part of the movie because it’s something so different than the Ark or the Holy Grail.

But dammit, I loved it and I’m really sorry that you didn’t. It was just a fun movie for me, like the previous films, like Star Wars…and I miss those kinds of movies.

Ok, so I need some more advice, specifically from someone who has already done the course. I’m filling out the application but I have to give a second choice course as well as Film Production.

So I need to know two things…

    1. Is the second choice course one that you do if you can’t get a place on your first choice course or is it one you as well as your first choice?

    2. Would it be worth my while giving TV and Video Production as my second choice?

The reason I need to know is because if the second choice is a course you go on if you don’t get your first choice, then TV and Video production would be a good choice, but if it’s one you do as well as your first choice, then I’d end up covering a lot of the same things twice and it might get confusing.

If it’s a second course that you are required to do as well as your first choice, then I was considering doing the computers course. I’ve actually already done it in Fas a few years ago, so I could take that course and breeze through it, being able to concentrate fully on Film Production.
