COMHAR ANNOUNCES MEDIA FUND TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ISSUESCOMHAR ANNOUNCES MEDIA FUND TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ISSUES
Comhar, the Sustainable Development Council, is offering media organisations and journalists throughout Ireland an opportunity to secure funding of up to €2,000 for media projects focusing on sustainable development issues.
The Council today (15.05.08) announced details of the Comhar Sustainable Development Media Fund, which is aimed at promoting more and better coverage of sustainable development issues.
The fund is open to all Irish media, including media students. Applications for print or broadcast projects are currently being accepted, as well as for photographic and new media projects.
Applications for funding will be judged by a three-person panel, chaired by broadcaster and award-winning architect Duncan Stewart. He will be joined on the judging panel by Noel Casserly, Director of Comhar, and Elaine Nevin, Director of ECO-UNESCO.
Commenting on the new fund, Noel Casserly said he hoped it would facilitate journalists and media organisations to pursue projects that might otherwise not have been funded.
“The aim of the fund is to assist the media to embark on projects that focus on a variety of sustainable development themes,” he said. “We’re hoping to fund projects that look at issues like climate change, sustainable transport, conservation and sustainable consumption. We’re also hoping for applications focusing on less obvious themes, for example, the links between sustainable development, public health and social inclusion or the role that local authorities can play in fostering sustainable communities.
“2008 marks the first year of the Comhar Sustainable Development Media Fund, but we hope to establish it as an annual opportunity for the Irish media to focus on sustainable development issues. We’re hoping for a good response from the media, and look forward to receiving wide-ranging and interesting applications.”
The closing date for applications for the Comhar Sustainable Development Media fund is Friday, 20th June 2008. Application forms and detailed guidelines are available on the Comhar website, http://www.comharsdc.ie.

I just bought a bicycle yesterday and plan to run the risk of cycling to work a few times a week.
