Ok so I’m going to be starting that film course in St. Johns in September and it occurred to me that it might be handy if I actually owned a camera.
So for someone starting out, what’s a good camera to get (I’m on a bit of a budget) and where in Cork can I get one?
My best advice is have a look in the Sony Centre and have a good chat with them in there , See if you can find something that suits your pocket .
I’d advise getting something that will take some accessories ( Filters and Adaptor lenses ) because you’ll have way more to work with
Unless you are going to spent a couple of grand on a camera I wouldn’t bother. You will be able to take a camera out from the college to do your course work. Of course other people will also want to take out cameras so you won’t always get one when you want.
When I went I did however have my own camera though it wasn’t until after first year I picked it up and was more to do with the fact the I do video work on the side than I needed it for college.

erm… from what I can remember in media analysis you eh oddly enough analyse the media

Is there anything in particular I should have going in?
don’t have any thing going in just a willingness to learn all i took on my first day was an a4 refill pad and a pen. don’t worry about a camera. media analysis is looking at different forms of media production but do watch out for desktop publishing, text production and communications major snore fests.
1st year really does suck!!!! be ready for lectures on attendance their kinda anal about it
as for work experience they’ll accept most stuff related to the course such as camera work or sound i did mine in Ros na Run and then in a radio station on the sound desk. ask photographers as well a lot of my year went to photographers. avoid the stations like rte they’ll just have you observing rather than actually experiencing if you wanna write why not try to get in touch with a dram group like corca dorca ( cant spell it) or graffiti maybe even the echo or the examiner you could also ask a lot of wedding videoers i’d try to have atleast one week set up before hand as when every one starts looking they fill up pretty fast.
thats my advice any way take from it what you will. if you’re directed on just writing the course may not be for you a lot of it is the technichal side of things to begin with and if you have no interest in these things at all then you’ll loose interest very quickly every body wants to be a director or write when they first go in though then they find out they have interest in other aspects too. you wont really have a dedicated script writing class till second year all you’ll learn in first year is layout.
i loved the course but you get from it what you put in !

oisin pretty much hit the nail on the head about st johns
you’ll need patience in first year alright (desktop publishing is particularly painful) but you do begin to get an idea of how to put your ideas up on the screen over the 3 years. having a camera is a big plus but if you get in early and show tadgh (the guy who books out the video & film kit) that you can be trusted you can use the college ones and from what i hear they’re using a HD camera, maybe a JVC, with a Mini35 mount and i think theres a PD150 & an FX1 or Z1.
Well I’m doing the course because I want to learn about everything and see if something outside screen writing would be good for me.
Is it true that you do another subject outside of film, like computers? Because I might be able to get an exemption from that. Did it years ago.

i was also considering getting a camera. saw a canon xl1 on ebay for 900euro.
i’d like something cheap and easy. something to practice on really, not too worried about broadcasting or anything. just wanna get into the craft of shooting.what would be the bare bones camera you could get?
bare bones is a really cheap, digital sd sony handycam, or a Canon mv series, cheap as chips, but at least its digital so you can edit away to your hearts content. Picture quality is rather poor though.
I would hold out if i was you though and try to borrow or rent a camera in the mean time until you can afford a good one., if you spend 3-400 on a cheap as chips digital camera it puts you back 3-400 when it comes time to buy the one you want. and the one for 3-400 will be utterly useless to you once you upgrade, you will not want to go back.
